Trudilus Cladius, who had taken leave from his duties, disemabrked from the merchant vessel and dusted the sand from his cloak. The chilly wind caught the sand and settled them gently along the shore of the largest island of the Balerics. Never had Trudilus been here but his mother had told him great stories of how his grandfather and great uncle had captured these islands for the Roman Republic. the battlements of Fort Cassandra stood before him...or rather what was left of the once famous fort. The fort was a monument to Roman ingenuity. It was the first fully circular fortress in the world, which gave it added strength and a enviable defensive ability. To this day it was still the only Roman fort never to fall. Only now it had fallen to rats and decay as Rome had long ago abandoned this jewel of the ocean. The old ship yards were now a stark reminder of the lack of Roman presence on the seas. This was something he would remedy. It seemed the sea life was in his blood.
Trudilus moved towards the ancient gate of the fortress. Many of the structures were in reasonable repair, only needing minor repair to make them habitable. The mighty iron gate had long ago been removed and probably melted down for some other use. The barracks and naval academy buildings which had produced so many well known figures such as Flavius Scipio were now in such a bad state of repair. Trudilus would reinvent this place and build a naval force for Rome to rival those of past generations.
