Publius stood before the men of the century, outfitted in their armor, scutum held before them. As he walked amongst their number, he saw the red eyes of those who had drank too much the night before, missing equipment, those out of uniform, and in some cases rusty equipment. Hecalled them to attention.
" It is my pleasure to serve as your Centurion. I hope in time that we will become friends and comrades, but if not, than I hope at least to have your respect. For starters let me say this... All double pay men, and those with immune status, that status is hereby revoked." there was a terrible shout and tremendous grumbling, Publius waved his hand, "such honors were handed out under visigoth watch, no true roman would want them. You can earn them once again. We will hold 30 days of training and endurance. Those who perform the best will recieve these positions. So if you feel you are deserving of this status, than you shall earn it. Now.. Prepare for force march..."
the young scipio centurion gave the command, and soon the century began marching... it wasn't long before several men were lagging behind. Publius dropped from his position and began to march circles around those falling behind.
"Congratulations, you've gone to Hades... you've fallen behind the rest of the legion, and had your throats slit by barbarians. Now lie down."
The exhausted men fell to the ground, thankful.
"the rest of you.. carry them. We leave none behind." And the march resumed again, this time the rest of the century carrying the fully armored "dead" soldiers. More dropped from exhausting, and those too were carried.. Soon as much as half of the century was being carried by those still willing or able to march.
"Halt." Publius said, "Combat Training... pair up with the man you carried, or the one who carried you... with scutum and gladius... begin."
Cries went up as those who did the most marching avenged themselves upon the one's who had been slack in their endurance.
The same event occurred the next day, and continued until no men dropped out of the march. The next day those out of uniform were carried, until everyone was as sharp and presentable as could be. The day after unit exercises were carried out, by whistle, verbal command, and by flag. Advance, retreat, fill the gap, the tortoise, turn left, turn right. Those who forgot or made mistakes, were carried during the force march the followed. Eventually every man knew his role, his postions and his purpose. When he was pleased with how they looked, Publius stood before them yet again, and spoke.
"I am pleased with the work you have done. I will be proud to serve with you against our enemies. You will know when you face the enemy that although you fight for the Republic and the glory of Rome, you ultimately fight for your comrade beside you. If you fail, than he suffers. So do not fail but serve with honor."
"Strength and Honor" came the reply.
Results: Publius Scipio spends 30 days training his century so they are once again up to legion standards.
