In the beautiful Mediterranean twilight the sun slowly disappeared down on the Moutons near Rome. Gracchus Maximus had ordered his men to get ready for a battle with the bandits below them in a bowl shaped meadow. As the men got their arms and roll calls were announced Maximus read his scrolls from Rome and listened to the latest rumors.
"Did you hear about the marketplace?" One legionnaire spoke.
"The people have revolted and have barricaded themselves in, has the revolution started?!" Another whispered ecstatically.
A letter was sent to Maximus talking of Oppius and how he was an outlaw on the run from the Visigoths. He was not worried but instead eager for the blood of Baleric to be spilt.
Looking to the west he saw his friend Cornelius Titus preparing his 500 horsemen for the surprise attack. They had talked last night of the strategy that was going to unfold. None of the bandits had even moved from their position and it looked as though a feint attack could work very well.
"Men get into formation!" He boomed throughout the camp.
The legionaries came together in five rows
Across the bowl, Titus prepares his men. He calls for Julius, Cato, Darius, Vibius, and Primus and says after they all report to him,
"Darius take your hundred archers and Scyth's and sneak around behind the raider camp, wait for Maximus's men to distract the raiders then send your Scyth's in by the cover of your stationary archers, Julius and Vibius, take you men to the East, Flank once you see the Scyth's storming into the bowl, Cato and Primus do the same except come from the West. Remember to stay out of site until the foot solders are close enough to the raiders. The raiders will not expect 500 cavalry encompassing them."
"Yes sir" said Julius, Cato, Darius, Vibius, and Primus as they start to line up their men and tell them the plan.
As 3 sides of the bowl get stocked with Cavalry, Maximus's men start to march down the mouth of the bowl, as they get closer the raiders pick up on the clanging armor and thumping of the solders feet, they gather their weapons, some mount the few horses they have and start to rush the men, At this point a Flaming arrow shot by Darius sends all of Titus's men into action, the Scyth's strike with furry as arrows come whizzing over head, the Raiders stood no chance to the horde of horses and the centurion of men. Steel clashed with steel, arrows pierce through flesh, lances through skulls, Shields clash, swords bash and within five minutes the raiders were finished, with no losses to either Roman army. Titus wipes the blood from his sword and removes arrows from the dead and places them back into his quiver and gives the order to his men
"Retrieve all the arrows you can save, we are off to Rome in a couple of hours, grab the rest you need its a long journey and don't expect any welcome mats when we get there!" he chuckles.
Maximus walks over to Titus, Shakes hands with him and says in a low voice "I will see you in Rome, you men fought well tonight, let the Gods guide us on our way to the New Republic!"
With those words he calls for his men to get back into formation and starts the march to Rome.
A few hours later Titus men mount their horses and start in the footpaths of Maximus men, Soon to overpass them and be in the view of the great city of Rome.
